Purple Yoshis are Yoshis that first appeared in the game Super Mario World 2 and later appeared in Super Mario Sunshine. In Super Mario Sunshine, when Yoshi eats a certain fruit (Durians or Chilli Peppers), he'll turn purple.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island[]
Purple Yoshi appears in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and is playable in the fifth level in each world.
Yoshi's Story[]
Purple Yoshi along with Brown Yoshi, was originally going to be in Yoshi's Story as playable characters, but was scrapped. However, a Purple Yoshi still appears at the beginning with teal shoes. His beta design shows him with pink shoes, which later caught on. When hacked into the game, his favorite fruit is Grape.
Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[]
In Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Purple Yoshi is exactly the same as in Super Mario World 2, except he has his pink shoes from Yoshi's Story.
Yoshi's Island DS[]
Like before, Purple Yoshi is playable in the fifth level in each world. Strangely enough, Yoshi's Island DS was thought to be his last appearance.

- For some reason, in the Yoshi pack in Mario Kart 8 and the playable Yoshi colours in Mario Strikers: Battle League, Purple alongside Brown Yoshi, weren't included, though the latter hasn't appeared in a game for decades.
